UTS Library 04

This library of the future was designed to break free from the separations that so often segregate university libraries, and allow for the transformations that are occurring within university learning.

Responding to the street and alumni green that are located on opposite sides of the library, the perforated façade also deals with the internal program. Where there is study space, café space and other programmes that require natural light, the perforations are larger than when there are book stacks and media areas. The perforations take into account both the internal and external.

To break down the segregation of space a ramp has been developed in the centre of the library, with a series of platforms that cantilever out towards the edges of the library. The programme of these platforms is flexible and interchangeable as the library evolves. The ramp takes the occupants who travel that far up to the roof garden which has study pods interspersed amongst the garden, along with a café and pub.

Voids are interspersed between the platforms, allowing light to infiltrate the library, with the relationships between programmes determined by precedent studies.
